FAI Colibri Badges

FAI Colibri Badges are international standards of achievement and proficiency. They encourage pilots to continue to acquire experience after having gained their pilot licence by, for instance, participating in longer distance flights, increasing the total number of hours flown or competing in FAI competitions.

There are four levels of Colibri. The prestigious Diamond Colibri is awarded by CIMA itself for holders of the Silver Colibri badge or higher for an outstanding flying achievement in the sport of microlight flying.

(Note: 'colibri' is the French word for 'hummingbird')

Requirements for Bronze Colibri badge:

a) 20 hours solo on Microlight or Paramotor aircraft including at least 50 flights.
b) 3 precision landings within 10 m of the centre of a given spot.
c) 1 precision landing within 20 m of the centre of a given spot from a height of 300 m (1000 ft) AGL with the throttle fully closed. Demonstration of correct go-around (overshoot) procedure.

1000 km

Now the good news, if you are a BMAA member and have an unrestricted microlight PPL or NPPL you have already earned the Colibri Bronze Award!! This is because the British Microlight pilot’s training course is considered to be so comprehensive that it covers everything that a person in another country would have to do to get the Bronze award. So, you have earned it, so now claim it and wear it with pride!

To claim the award, get a copy of the Bronze Claim Form , get your CFI to sign as the official observer (BMAA instructors are recognised as Official observers for the Colibri Awards), then send the form, a photocopy of your license and £5.00 to Chris Draper and you will receive your Bronze badge and a certificate.

Now that you have your Bronze, why not think about doing the Silver?  Silver Claim Form. If a few of you get together you could have some fun flying as a group as well as getting another skills award.

The Colibri Chief Observer within the BMAA is:-

Chris Draper
